Spanish (Improvers)
This is the third year of a beginners' course that started in Autumn 2009. We reckon to do 30 weeks, roughly following the evening class year. We meet in my house, on Thursday mornings 10.00 to 11.30, including a break for coffee. The charge is 50p per meeting, to cover drinks and materials.
We're a very mixed group. Some are survivors from the first beginners' class. Others have joined more recently with Spanish they've learned elsewhere. It's challenging providing materials that mean people with different standards each get something valuable from sessions. However, members are supportive to each other and the group is great fun to teach.
There's no homework unless people want it. There's some grammar every week, only because it helps people learn more quickly if they understand why some things are right and some wrong. We read, listen to native speakers on tape, translate into and out of Spanish. We can now just about cope with (carefully selected) articles from El País. We have conversation but we are definitely
not a conversation class. We´ve had Spanish visitors and the class rose to the occasion. I was so proud of them. So, we mix up what we do and try to make it fun.
