PETERSFIELD U3A – SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY GROUP
PROGRAMME 2011 / 2012
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MEETINGS on 4th Tuesdays at 2.00 p.m. in the Exhibition Room. Open to all members. A charge of £1 is made to cover the cost of the room.
On 24th April we have a visit to the Grayshott Pottery near Hindhead. The main event will be a guided tour of the
working area of the pottery split into groups of 12 (the pottery itself is large and employs 25 people). The work
that they carry out is very varied and they try to be as self sufficient as possible, carrying out many different tasks including mould and transfer making on the premises. The pottery creates art ceramics for galleries and homes around the UK and their own stoneware brand making catering ware for well known national high street pubs and restaurants, as well as bespoke ceramics for celebrity chefs. The large shop and café are well worth a
visit in their own right and time for visiting these is included. Allow 2 hrs plus travelling, £2 per head plus travel. A few places are still available but booking is essential for this trip, preferably via e-mail to me at theaddress above but otherwise by telephone.
Meeting at the Community Centre at 1300 hrs.
On 22nd May we welcome Professor Marks to talk to us about “Insulin Murders”. He will be explaining what insulin is and how it can cause harm as well as good. He will illustrate the point with reference to some famous legal cases in which insulin was used, or was thought to have been used, as a murder weapon. Sounds jolly interesting, but not spooky!
Then on Wednesday 27th June we are going to Amberley, the open air museum near Arundel, where we will be having a presentation on the history of the chalk quarry, as well as a relaxing walk around all the museum exhibits. The displays on the history of telephones and electricity are very “hands-on”and quite fascinating. Also of great
interest are the bodger’s camp, the Southdown bus garage, the narrow gauge railway, the many old vehicles (some running) and the road building museum. A large café is available for those in need of sustenance. Booking will again be essential.
