Music Appreciation

We have covered a lot of ground since we started this group in 1994 - 1200 years of music in fact.  We started by looking at music in the 8th century and progressed up to the 20th century.  We've heard Romantic piano music, how the symphony evolved, Mozart arias, musical jokes as well as funny peculiar music, French, Russian and American music, sea music and the strange soundscape of early instruments.  We have listened to Spring and Summer music - and might get to Autumn and Winter.  We listen to operas and ballet on CD and see them on DVD and we've had a live concert of flute and recorder music and a quiz on film music.

We occasionally get out into the wide world and have visited two keyboard instrument collections - the Cobbe Collection at Clandon Park near Guildford and Finchococks
near Goudhurst in Kent, and we have been to a Dolmetsch Festival concert.

Most people have wanted to do their own Desert Island discs.  We've done it, and have had many enjoyable sessions wondering why people have chosen that, or being glad that they have.  Any new members who join are given their opportunity too, if they wish.

We are currently studying composers from A to Z, and have been for the past few years (along with other things).  We hope to live long enough to get to Z.

It's been very interesting.
